When you don’t know what to do, do something.

Life is full of problems, big and small. Some are simple, others complex, but all require some level of problem-solving skills. Whether it’s figuring out how to fix a leaky faucet or solving a complex mathematical equation, the ability to solve problems is essential in our daily lives. As a new full-time entrepreneur there is no shortage of problems — or opportunities, as I like to call them — on a daily basis.

As I brainstormed ways to solve my latest incidence of “stuckness” I not only resolved my issue but also found inspiration to share the method I used to solve it.

Here are some tips for mastering the art of figuring it out:

  1. Define the Problem Clearly: The first step in problem-solving is to clearly define the problem. This involves identifying what the problem is and what you want to achieve. Write down the problem and break it down into smaller parts if needed — the key here is to not get overwhelmed and be able to hone in on the core of your problem.
  2. Gather Information: Once you have defined the problem, gather as much information as possible about it. This may involve conducting research, talking to experts, or gathering data. For me, this meant looking for information on YouTube.
  3. Analyze the Situation: Analyze the information you have gathered and consider all possible solutions. Brainstorming is a useful tool at this stage. Write down all possible solutions, no matter how far-fetched they may seem. Again, be careful not to get too overwhelmed by focusing on the how and instead list any and all possible solutions. The how will come later.
  4. Develop a Solution: Once you have analyzed the situation and considered all possible solutions, find the solution that solves as much of your problem as possible with the least amount of resources or effort. This may involve combining different options or innovating a unique approach.
  5. Implement the Solution: Once you have developed a solution, implement it. It’s go time!
  6. Evaluate the Solution: After implementing the solution, evaluate its effectiveness. Did it solve the problem? If not, this may be a good time to revisit the problem (go back to step 1) or try another solution.

Benefits of Figuring It Out

The best part of successfully solving problems is that it gets easier and easier to walk through the process with each new opportunity that arises. Here are some additional benefits:

  1. Improve Critical Thinking Skills: Problem-solving requires critical thinking skills, a quality that pretty much benefits all of the areas of your life.
  2. Enhance Creativity: When you are faced with a problem, you are forced to think creatively and come up with innovative solutions.
  3. Build Confidence: Successfully figuring out a solution to a problem can boost your confidence and self-esteem.
  4. Increase Resilience: Problem-solving can be challenging and may require multiple attempts before a solution is found. This can help build resilience and perseverance.

Figuring out solutions to problems is an essential skill that can be learned and developed. It requires critical thinking, creativity, and a willingness to take risks. Hope these tips helped, and remember to focus on progress, not perfection.
