Who Am I?

I am currently reading Viola Davis’ biography, Finding Me, and within the first few pages she describes a story in which she is on a movie set and a fellow actor asks who she is. Not in a ‘I don’t know you,’ sort of way, but in a soul-searching who are you at your core sort of way. As I’m reading it I realize I don’t have a succinct answer to that myself and yet here I am having just started a blog…but we’ll come back to that in a bit. She then goes on to tell her birth story and again I realize that aside from knowing my birth time and the fact that I came after my due date I know nothing else about the day I was born. My earliest memories involve:

  • Me getting in trouble around the age of 5 for wandering off to a toy store at the mall,
  • Getting autographs from obscure 49ers players also at the mall,
  • Recording an audition on video tape for an M&M’s commercial in which I for the life of me could not properly pronounce ‘M&M’ — still haunts me to this day,
  • Walking in a Montgomery Ward fashion show…also at the mall.

I may have just had an epiphany as to why shopping is a comfort habit despite the financial pinch it can cause. It’s my version of sky diving. Also realizing perhaps why I gave my football playing ex the benefit of the doubt so many times despite his actions showing me otherwise. I grew up watching football as a child, still love watching to this day and my kids play, but I suppose that exposure created a sense of safety that I have subconsciously carried until this very moment. Making a mental note to keep unpacking both those things. But I digress…

I am a…

Woman who always does her best everyday

I am no longer a victim of circumstance. My past deserves gratitude and respect but it does not define me.

Your past does not define you either.

Every moment is a choice. Have fun and don’t forget to be gentle with yourselves!

Until next time…
